In Project-M there is put too much into the color presentation.
Straight double height Antic Mode D plus GPRIOR 0 setting for the PMg plus those Raster Tricks as in Project-M would have helped a lot. Additional colors still could be added.

Particular, if the walls were grey, it's not a problem to add up to 8 colors for up to 12 colors per scanline.
You know light and dark blue for the doors, light and dark brown for wooden walls ...

And, please: No huge borders around the graphics ;)

    You know:

    Antic D LMS xxxx
    Antic D LMS xxxx
    Antic D
    Antic D LMS xxxx +40
    Antic D
    Antic D LMS xxxx +80
    Antic D
    Antic D LMS xxxx +120

    and so on

Till the screen is filled ;)

What we see in Project-M is the 20 fps which points to fast enough "3D" calculations for any 3D projection game.
If DMA Cycle stealing and Graphics handling by ANTIC is optimized, even enemies can be there.

    Still my Question:

What is stopping them from using the Atari as it's built ?

    nogorg:

A widzisz chooolera ... jednak zrobiłem coś źle ;)

You should check the games more.
Those "special" C64 Games mostly use 8 way scrolling.
And here is the problematic point:
The horizontal scrolling of the Atari seems to be useful in many circumstances, but it also slows things down. The PMg hasn't enough details. We have game that show the same type of programming , but people don't like the result. Remember how the "Sprites" look in Green Beret or Rampage on the Atari.
Vertical scrolling comes for free, and allows a lot manipulations.
On the C64 it is not much difference, whether the screen scrolls in the horizontal or vertical direction. Also, there is no problem to give the needed "face" to the Sprites. Just set the pointer to x and y position, and set the pointer for the face. To do some animation in the sprite, just change the pointer of the face.

It's actually that fact that C64 Game Engines give easy results even to the greenest coders, that makes all those games possible. Also, the saved time for engine development, allows a huge base of games, styles, level designs.
Particular for that type of games, the C64 is in a relative matter 8 times faster than the Atari, as the hardware features do a lot to compensate the low CPU speed.

AGD - Arcade Game Designer, ZX Spectrum, ->link<-

AGS - Adventure Game Studio, PC Windows, ->link<-

The Challenge is a good cause.
But you have restrictions where the biggest challenge won't bring results.
Particular those "scrolling games with sprites" conversions will only be possible on the Atari, if the coder decides not to use too complex Level Design and a limited amount of moving objects.

If the coders were putting that same amount of "Brain and Time" to the Atari specific advantages, I'm pretty sure, a Wolf 3D Clone was available then.
Using Antic D allows also to use Samples at a very nice rate. So all known FX could be there .
As I wrote above: Project-M shows clearly that the Atari's CPU is fast enough to handle the "3D Movement" that would be needed for Wolf 3D.
Using Mode D plus Antic DL tricks, the imagination of a full working game will be there.
No need for "256" colors. A dedicated 12 color mode would do very fine.

If you really want to code on the Atari.
You simply have to re check, what you get .

If you read my posts, you might see my point.
The Atari's hardware is from 1979. Never changed , till the 90s. So there are limits. Particular if you think about the complexity of Antic's CPU Cycle Stealing.
After 40 Years, they still suppress the reality. That's why a lot people put a lot time into Atari Projects, even if it was stated before, that it will not work.
But they know it better, pulling others who where interested in doing Stuff for that machine.

Projects that could be done, still don't get attention by that.
    That's the real Poison.
Sometimes I think, there were too much C64 Freaks under the Mask of an Atari User. And that's why they direct interested People into dead ends, to get the real nice stuff prevented from finding interest.

After all that years, and if you checke the available GAMES (please don't mix them up with Tech Demos) , you see clearly what the Atari can do and what not.

You need to take care of "Real available Games" and forget "Tech Demos" . It's in the complexity of ANTIC's Cycle Stealing , and the Fact that PMg needs also care , using CPU and Software Routines, if you want to have them special colored and more detailed.

    Irata4

    See the Problem ?

Ilmenit names it "emkay's dreams" , what clearly is the better way to chose , to get things done on the Atari.

"Idiots" is always the term they use.

The Atari has been done to do 3D ego view (1st Person , 3rd Person) by the developers of the Hardware.
The PMg had never been build to do a Turrican like game.
It had been done to have an overlay, some moving objects , and extra color.

It is NOT my dream to have things done "my way" . I only point to what's possible, and what not.

The way they get it, is their own "ability".
So , if you get too close to Solo/NG , don't be surprised, if he names you "Lamer" also, because , he's the chosen .

    IRATA4

Starraiders, Rescue on Fractalus, Koronis Rift . They are based on real 3D calculations for the position of any object.
    Project-M shows 3D movement at 20 fps.

Doing any new game of that type would need to use all Tricks that could be get using every Display List Tricks.

You know, it is possible to change the content of one Scanline, and copy it without any need of the CPU to the whole screen.

In theory , calculating 5 different scanlines for the ground movement is needed , to have a Room projection , using DL Tricks.

Then you can re use scanlines by LMS settings. You could just mirror the most content on the horizon line , to get the floor done.

Using 3 DLIs to set the position of a Door or other special colored elements, plus the calculation for the x position .

There is no need for complex texture calculations or Filling routines at first.
Just straight x y calculations , while the z axis is fully done, using all raster / Displaylist Tricks .
GPRIOR Mode 0 cost nothing. Two players can be used to colorize big parts on the screen, just by setting the x position. The other 2 Players and the Missiles could be used to give some extra colored details.

As this is fully undiscovered Land, the real usable details and colors could be rated, if a working engine exists.

Again: NRV did show that 20 FPS are possible in that game, even if such a lot color changes take a lot CPU .

    Emkay

8 bit computers were not designed for 3D games. If somebody wants to try something I have nothing against it, I really like it, maybe even Doom can be created, I don't say not. But saying all the time on forums that all other projects are nonsense is wrong. And you do this unfortunately.

Previous year you strongly criticised my demo with parallax (as the only person on forum) saying it is dead end and nonsense. Obviously I have better knowledge about programming since opposite to you I do this all my life. I'm able to count cycles and I know I can make game from it. No, not Turrican style, but still nice game, more Wratch of the Demon style. 2D game which many Atari users will like to see and play, and which would be extremely difficult to port to C64 not having Atari technical advantages. It will take time but I hope I do this in the future, I only took break to learn Mad Pascal and DLI possibilities better during making Albert.

I have seen you strongly criticised Fimbo Quest port for Atari, (as the only person on another forum), saying it cannot be done. Authors say it is almost done. We will see soon I hope who is right and who is talking nonsense.

By attacking all new ambitious projects on forums you show no respect to other people work. What reaction do you expect then.

Ilmenit , save your useless comments for Atariage. I also know how Rastaconverter works. The useless part of the discussion is where it is about to do a converter that gets more details, to make more fair images that can be viewed full screen and not in a Thumbnail size. And that is what You didn't understand.

Also, how hard is it , to understand that I never will do such a project, because I don't find the Time for it ? It is that type of ignorance like yours that kills every discussion. On Atariage enough Jesters and Trolls entered such discussions and things got screwed up quickly.

If Coders find the time to do stuff for the Atari, I'm just pointing to what's missing, what's possible and what is wasted time.

And, yes, I understand that you have problems with my proposal ...
